Taleed

The Concept

Taleed, meaning "Old and Inherited" in Arabic, is a free-standing cabinet crafted from dyed palm tree leaves, utilizing the UAE's abundant, sustainable resource.

Inspiration & Craft

This piece incorporates a new marquetry technique, with dyed palm leaves stained using indigo powder, echoing the iconic burqa’a, a traditional women’s face covering. Inspired by our grandmothers, who displayed face coverings in UAE museums to promote women’s empowerment and preserve Emirati identity, the burqa’a made from indigo-dyed fabric symbolizes tradition and cultural heritage.

The indigo powder leaves a mark, known as "Buqam," representing memories or lasting impacts of an event.

The Design

The cabinet’s diamond-patterned palm leaves add visual depth, celebrating UAE culture and the palm tree’s roots. The tall, irregular design symbolizes women's empowerment and resilience, while the rounded curves reflect grace, beauty, and meticulous craftsmanship. Gaps in the front elevation highlight the intricate design process, further emphasizing the piece’s cultural significance and artisanal value.
